How to create good test instructions

To get the most out of your user tests, use this guide to set up your user test.

Watch example videos of user tests

For an easier understanding on how user tests can be set up, watch the example videos located in your Results/Videos section in UserPeek.

Insert the URL and add tasks

To set up a test on our platform all you need is an URL link (Website-URL or App-Link) and a few tasks for the testers to follow.

Use a UserPeek template to set up your tasks much easier. For example, if you are testing an online-shop, use the e-commerce template and adjust it accordingly.

What is a good task?

A good task is one that enables the testers to have freedom in exploring your website and speaking their thoughts rather than answering a Yes or No question. Use sentences like

  • “Please do XX and describe what you like or dislike about it.”
  • “You are looking for XX. Please describe your experience while finding XX.” or “If you haven’t found XX, what would you have expected?”
  • “You are using this software-as-a-service. Please sign up with fictitious data. What do you like about the process, what did you dislike?”

What is a good scenario?

A good scenario is putting the tester in a scenario where they can relate. Keep your task scenarios as short as possible. Let testers figure out things for themselves.

Use scenarios like:

  • “Imagine you are travelling to XX during the summer with XX.”
  • “Your friend has recommended this website xxx to have a look at it. You are looking for XXX.”
  • “This is a prototype-test, the functionality is limited. You have found this software after looking for a better way to xxx.”

Tipps:

  • Use common or known words. Remember that your testers match your target group.
  • Try to communicate in their common language.
  • Write clear and understandable without using expert language or too academic.
  • Pre-test your tasks with colleagues or friends to make sure they are easy to understand and people really know what you want them to do.
  • Focus on what’s really necessary. Try to shorten your task as much as possible. In doubt, ask 1 question at a time.
